Working with Scrum

Hello again, this is Hampus Bergström the game designer in team Wendigo that is currently working on the game Umibōzu. For this course we have been introduced to and are working in Scrum a subset of the agile framework.  Scrum has helped us a lot with communication within the team, it is always clear what someone is working on and what is being worked on thanks to the daily stand-up meetings that are incorporated in Scrum. Without the meeting everyday in person and answering what have been done, what is being worked on and what is blocking everyone from completing work there would be a risk of people working on the same thing. Meeting in person everyday is also a great motivation to work harder on the game when you hear how hard everyone else is working. I think that the daily stand-up meetings have helped us the most in the team, but scrum has affected our development process in many other positive ways.

Working in short sprints as one does when working with scrum gives the team a great chance to test different features and quickly adapt and change the game according to the feedback received. When we worked on different group project before using scrum testing was mostly done at the end of the project unless there were mandatory testing sessions. Working like that did not give room for any big changes to the project being worked on after testing had been done. Now when we are working in scrum we test features all the time and have created a habit of testing all types of assets and receiving feedback from each other and testers during test-sessions.

Structure is another scrum have given our team. By having sprint plan meetings, it is always clear what needs to be done and thanks to the user stories everyone in the team understands the goals for each sprint. I could personally have a hard time before using sprint plan meetings to organize what work that needs to be done. Having user stories and breaking them down into smaller tasks helps a lot to see all the work that needs to be put into the game or project. Before using scrum, it could be difficult to clearly see every asset that needed to be created for a feature to be complete.

Using scrum has helped me and my team to work harder and take the work more seriously and greatly increase the communication and understanding between us.

  1. Hi Hampus, this is Carl, the lead designer and sound for Team Troll. This post is very well written and it explains the issues your group has had before and how the scrum framework has made it easier for your group to come up with solutions for the issues. It’s nice to see that the communication of the team is working out fine and that the daily stand-up meetings shows its positive effect on the group. One thing I could relate with was your experience with the group project we had before we were introduced to the scrum framework. You made a project with some features but they were not really tested, then when it was tested at the end, it showed it had flaws, but by that point it was a bit too late for changes. This time, thanks to the scrum framework, you’ve avoided that which is great. Another good thing you pointed out was the structure your team has, it shows that you guys knows what to do and what needs to be done. Great read!
Good luck with your game these remaining weeks!
